Post-Op Lymphatic Massage: Your Essential Recovery Plan

Post-op recovery is just as important as the surgery itself. The right care can make a world of difference in how you heal—and how quickly you feel like yourself again. Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a critical step in the process, designed to reduce swelling, ease discomfort, and help your body recover more smoothly.

Why Post-Op MLD is Non-Negotiable

Surgery puts stress on your body—swelling, soreness, and the effects of anesthesia and pain meds can slow down your recovery. MLD helps counteract these effects by encouraging the body to flush out excess fluids, reduce inflammation, and improve circulation, so you can heal faster and with less discomfort.

Here’s how MLD can benefit your recovery:

  • Reduces post-op swelling: Drains excess fluid that builds up after surgery, minimizing puffiness and discomfort.
  • Speeds up healing: Helps reduce bruising and tenderness, so you feel better faster.
  • Alleviates constipation: Eases the common side effect of pain medications by stimulating lymph flow and encouraging digestion.
  • Clears anesthesia effects: Helps your body detox from anesthesia more efficiently, leaving you feeling less groggy and sluggish.

What’s Included in Your First Three Sessions

For real, lasting results, three sessions are the minimum I recommend for post-op recovery. Anything less won’t give your body the support it needs to start healing properly.

The initial three sessions are $570 (excluding travel fee) and include:

  • 60-minute in-home MLD sessions, so you can recover in the comfort of your own home.
  • Red light therapy, which further supports healing by reducing inflammation and pain.
  • A copy of the Plastic Surgery Recovery Handbook by Kathleen Lisson, filled with expert advice to guide you through every stage of your recovery.

These three sessions are designed to kickstart your healing and give you the essential care your body needs to recover effectively.

After Your Initial Sessions: Ongoing Care

After the first three sessions, most people benefit from 5-10 sessions (or more) depending on the procedure and the amount of liposuction or work done. Each additional session is $185. These ongoing sessions help ensure your body continues to heal, reduce swelling, and enhance the final results of your surgery.

Why MLD is Crucial After Surgery

Whether you’ve had liposuction, a tummy tuck, or another cosmetic procedure, post-op care isn’t something to take lightly. Here’s why MLD is essential:

  • Minimizes fluid retention and prevents lumps or uneven results.
  • Reduces pain and stiffness, so you can get back to your daily routine sooner.
  • Supports your body’s natural detox process by promoting lymphatic drainage, helping you recover more comfortably.

Plan Ahead for Your Recovery

The best time to schedule your post-op care is before your surgery. Especially during busy seasons, having your MLD sessions booked in advance ensures you get the care you need when you need it most. Don’t wait until after surgery—set yourself up for success by planning your recovery now.

Payment Options

I accept HSA cards, as well as other payment methods for your convenience.

Frequently Asked Questions - Before Your Sessions

We can typically start your MLD sessions once your surgical port has been removed, which is usually between 48 hours and 7 days post-surgery. It’s best to schedule your sessions ahead of time so everything is set up before your procedure.

It’s important to be as comfortable as possible during your sessions. Here’s what you can do to prepare:

  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing that’s easy to take on and off.

  • Stay hydrated! Drinking plenty of water before your session helps your lymphatic system work more effectively.

  • Make sure your surgical incisions are clean and properly dressed if needed. We do not touch incisions or stitches during MLD, we also do not work while drains are still in.

  • Have a comfortable, quiet space ready at home where we can work without interruptions.

No, MLD is a very gentle, light-pressure technique that focuses on the surface of your skin. You won’t experience pain during the session, and many clients feel relief from discomfort and swelling afterward.

Each MLD session is approximately 60 minutes. This allows enough time to focus on the areas that need attention without overworking your healing body.

Your body needs time and consistent care to start healing properly. Three sessions are the minimum to see noticeable results and give your lymphatic system the support it needs to reduce swelling and promote healing. Most people benefit from 5-10 sessions, but we can reassess your needs after the initial three.

After your sessions

Most clients feel immediate relief from swelling and discomfort, though results can vary. You might notice some increased fluid drainage (urination) as your body starts to flush out excess fluid. This is normal and a good sign that the treatment is working!

After your session, here’s how you can support your recovery:

  • Drink plenty of water to help your body continue flushing out fluids.

  • Avoid strenuous activity for the rest of the day to allow your body to heal.

  • If you notice any discomfort, gentle movement (like walking) can help, but avoid anything too taxing.

  • It's not uncommon to have to use the restroom more often, or to feel more tired after your sessions. Allow your body to rest as much as possible.

MLD is all about frequency over duration. For the best results, it’s common to schedule 10 consecutive sessions if both schedules allow. The goal is to keep your lymphatic system working efficiently, so back-to-back sessions can accelerate healing. If daily sessions aren’t possible, we can space them out every other day to maintain progress.

This is why it’s so important to schedule your post-op care at the same time as your procedure. Planning ahead ensures you’ll have a clear, consistent schedule that supports your recovery without gaps.

In addition to your MLD sessions, staying hydrated, eating anti-inflammatory foods (like those in the Plastic Surgery Cookbook I offer by Kathleen Lisson), and getting plenty of rest will all help your recovery go smoother. Avoid smoking and alcohol as they can slow down healing.

If swelling feels excessive or painful, it’s best to consult with your surgeon first. MLD will help reduce swelling, but severe symptoms should always be evaluated by your healthcare provider. In the meantime, make sure you’re following your surgeon’s aftercare instructions closely.

general Questions

Yes! I accept HSA and FSA cards for all MLD sessions, as well as other payment options for your convenience.

Absolutely, but given that Tough Love Wellness is a busy mobile practice, I ask that you give 48 hours' notice if you need to make a change. This allows me to accommodate other clients and keep everything running smoothly.

You can book your sessions directly by reaching out to me through the contact form or by phone. I recommend scheduling your first three sessions ahead of time, so everything is set up before your procedure.

You can review all of my booking and cancellation policies here. It’s important to familiarize yourself with them before scheduling to ensure smooth planning and avoid any unexpected fees or changes.
